First record of Carex vesicaria (Cyperaceae) in Sicily.
2004
The first record of Carex vesicaria from Sicily is reported. This circumboreal species, so far known from the peninsular regions of Italy and from Corsica, has been found in a marshy mead- ow within the Fagus sylvatica and Acer pseudoplatanus woody belt of the Nebrodi mountains (N-E Sicily). The phytocoenosis established in this locality is characterized by C. vesicaria itself together with a few other hygrophytes such as Galium elongatum, Mentha aquatica and Juncus effusus. This plant community belongs to a context of hygro-hydrophilous vegetation where marshy features characterized by Juncus striatus and Calliergonella cuspidata alternate with the lacustrine ones characterized by Potamoge…
Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from Sicily (Italy)
2016
Abstract Di Gristina, E., G. Gottschlich & F.M. Raimondo (2016). Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from Sicily (Italy). Candollea 71: 7–12. In English, English abstract. DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.15553/c2016v711a2 Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula Di Grist., Gottschl. & Raimondo (Asteraceae), a new endemic subspecies from the Madonie and Nebrodi Mountains (Sicily, Italy), is described and illustrated. It is morphologically close to Pilosella hoppeana subsp. macrantha (Ten.) S. Braut. & Greuter, but the two subspecies can be distinguished by the indument on the bracts. Its morphology, distribution, ecology, taxonomic relat…
Differences of raw cork quality in productive cork oak woods in Sicily in relation to stand density
2010
Differences of raw cork quality, in terms of thickness and porosity, were observed in productive cork oak (Quercus suber L.) stands in the Nebrodi and Iblei mountains of Sicily in relation to stand density. Five study areas were chosen across a range of different stand density satisfying specific sampling requirements among two managed cork oak stands. Analysis of variance using Fisher-Snedecor's F test (p<0,05) were used to identify statistically significant differences of cork quality and sylvicultural, dendrometric and cork stripping parameters between study areas within each stand and also between stands. Relationships between cork quality and sylvicultural and dendrometric parameters w…
Hydrophytic vegetation aspects in the Nebrodi mountains (Sicily)
2009
The vegetation of damp areas in the Nebrodi Natural Park was already surveyed in some studies (Brullo et al. 1994). In particular, the various hygro and hydrophytic aspects were referred to associations belonging to the Phragmitetea and the Potamogetonetea classes respectively. Small lacustrine habitats in Sicily have disappeared almost everywhere and are conserved still today only in the Nebrodi Mountains. They host widely distributed hydrophytes. Some of these plants are rather localized in Sicily, e.g. Potamogeton polygonifolius Pourr. and Utricularia australis R. Br. The latter occurs also in the Madonie Mountains. Recent analyses revealed some hollows characterized by an accentuated re…
